We’re Loving All the Christian Music on American Idol This Season

Three contestants who have made it to the Top 20 in the 21st season of American Idol chose songs by Christian music artists to perform in the competition to reach the top 12!

Haven Madison, daughter of Christian music singer, Jason Roy, sang Leanna Crawford‘s “Mean Girls”, a song about the power of words.

Stick and stones may break my bonesBut no one ever warned me about words
I smile and I pretend it doesn’t hurtBut the older that I get it just gets worseLord, find me and remind me that my worthIs worth so much more than their words

The judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, praised Haven’s song choice saying it felt like a song Haven could have written herself. She delivered a powerful performance of Leanna’s lyrics. I am sure navigating this world of new success including critiques from famous judges, comments on social media, and pressure from other talented contestants have made this song an anthem for Haven. We love seeing Haven proclaim where her true worth is found!

Megan Danielle from Douglasville, GA chose to sing “Holy Water” by We the Kingdom on the same night. Megan also competed on The Voice in 2020, making it to the top 9. Megan’s unique and gritty voice inspired this comment from Luke Bryan

“This is the best performance we’ve seen you do this season. Nobody sounds anything like you. You can tell your stories with your voice.”

The stories Megan wants to tell are ones about God as she told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“This gave me an opportunity to share my love of God. I want to be able to just lead people where the world is missing and the world is missing God. That’s what I strongly believe. And I want to really do better for myself and lead people in the right direction.”

Earlier this season, Megan was surprised by another Christian artist she admires, Lauren Daigle, during her American Idol audition.

When South Carolina native, Warren Peay auditioned for American Idol with the Zach Williams song, “To the Table”, Katy Perry called him a Christian Chris Stapleton. On top 20 night, Warren chose another Zach Williams song “Up There Down Here”, getting a shout out from Zach Williams on social media! Zach said that

“Each time he covers my songs, it’s a blessing to hear. Cheering for you brother!”

Haven, Megan and Warren are following in the footsteps of some of our favorite Christian artists who also got their start on American Idol, like Mandisa, Danny Gokey, Lauren Daigle and Colton Dixon. We’re excited to see what God has planned for their future and hope to continue enjoying their music for years to come!
