Why Does My Identity in Christ Matter? | Lauren Daigle

More than ever our culture is obsessed with “finding yourself” and “being yourself,” but at the same time, lies about who we should be and who we’ll never be are more rampant than ever. How do we know what our identity truly is?

We sat down with Lauren Daigle and learned why the subject of identity is so important to her. Her song “You Say” is full of truth about who God says we are so we asked how she learned to believe these truths for herself and what she thinks of our culture’s identity crisis.

“Do I think we’re in an identity crisis? I do, personally, because there’s so much vying for our attention, vying for our affection… We can’t spend a moment without staying connected… be present without something distracting us. This is something I’ve, honestly, gotta work on. I have made distraction my normal…

This morning I sat still… I’ gonna just practice being still… just kept things really simple. I think that’s what this song for me was. It’s going back to the basics. It’s about going back to remembering, “Ok, God, what do you say about me?” … When I’m dealing with a world of distraction in my thought life, in my physical life, around me, emotionally, whenever those things are happening, what are the basics that I can go back to that are fundamental?” – Lauren Daigle

I mentor high school students both through my youth group and with my interns. I cannot tell you how many times I see that identity being warped by social media. As a photographer, I try to balance my posts with lifting up my clients and my interns with positivity and hope when I feature them on my IG page. I hope the focus is less on the perfect looking photo and more on who they are as a person. I’m developing a program called Perspectives that incorporates photography, mentoring and group socials to focus on true identity and help foster… Read more »

1 John 2 is talking about if we are true believers we will follow the commands of God and we will love our brothers and sisters. In verses 15-17 it tells us that if we love the things of this world love for the Father is not in us. It goes on to say that lust and pride come from the world and the things of this world will pass away. Like they talked about with Lauren, don’t be distracted by the things of this world (money, recognition, fame, attention…), keep your eyes fixed on God and the prize which… Read more »

Upon asking God what is His identity for me : the answer always comes back …look to Me , walk with Me and wait upon Me. After multiple times of praying the same question to Him it appears I need work on the waiting upon Me .

Waiting on God is a concept that totally changed my walk with Jesus. My sister and I read a devotional by Andrew Murray called Waiting on God. We read a portion several times and then talked about it. Learning to wait has changed us so much!
We are both calmer, less anxious, and less stressed by circumstances. We are still growing in this practice.

This was a great discussion. It would be great if just once a day you could just disconnect from all of the technology and maybe reach into your inner child. Good advise

Idenity is something I heard many struggling with. They see themselves through what they think others believe about them… parental comments, comments from friends and family, coworkers and church memebers. My prayer is that we can see through God’s Word who He says we are and then believe Him as Lauren’s song reminds us.

This is the type of distraction I need in my life right now! I need to know what God says about me! That song You Say has helped me at the same time when I hear it I break down! I need to learn to trust in Him completely and not take it back! I have become so full of worry and anxiety it has crippled me. I know I can do all things through Him and I am excited to be on this journey here at Waynation
    God bless

Yeah but…who is God? There are many Gods. She never mentions Jesus. This is very confusing for Christian audiences

God loves all his children he gave his only son for us when we hurt one of his children we hurt God. Jesus came to earth and loved and talked to those others shamed We all have our personal battles with sin and through God’s great love and amazing grace we break those chains. To avoid or treat others like they.are untouchable and dirty makes us sinners again Jesus said to love and through love we can teach others to love God like true brothers and sisters in Christ we are We are to be fishers of men not just… Read more »

My son is struggling with knowing his identity. He feels he doesn’t fit in… he’s different… he’s not masculine enough or man enough so he thinks it might be better to be a girl…. he’s 19…. what do I say to him tohelp him see he’s just who God created him to be a child of God.?

wow Melinda I will pray for your son! At a time in his life where he shouldn’t be worrying about what others think about him or his image, it sounds like it is weighing heavy. I have been struggling with the same type of thing that I fear what others are thinking or saying about me. He is so young and should be enjoying life and yes if you try to remind him that being masculine doesn’t make a man, being a man of God does. God can help your son and someone like me learn to Not worry about… Read more »

Lauren, I was not able to post on another site but, I wanted to ask you why you think that homosexuality is not a sin. You said you didnt know if it was that I am not God. No you are not God but we as Christians when we see someone that supposedly is a Christian sinning we try to gently turn them back to what they need to be. It says so in the Bible, any Christian that turns one person back to the Lord is great in his site. We quote get brownie points with the Lord however,… Read more »

I just stumbled across this at 3:34 AM this morning. Their is a nice breeze coming in through the window. I hear the wind chimes gently singing a tune. And one of my cats is snoring.
I enjoyed listening/reading this article with Lauren Daigle. Thank you.
