Am I Defined By My Abilities? | Tim Tebow

Week 2: Lies We Believe

Combatting the lie: My success defines me.

Tim Tebow was set up for success in the sports world, but it didn’t go exactly as he planned. Instead, God has given him a tremendous story and platform about finding purpose in whatever God has for us. Watch today’s video to learn how to transcend your current life situation and find purpose that goes well beyond our culture’s definition of success. If you like it, check out Tim’s book, This is the Day.

Tim says, “You don’t think that there were times when I thought, “Hey, I’m just gonna go win a few Super Bowls. It’s gonna be great!” Our plan is not always God’s plan, but I’ve got to trust the character of God – that He knows more than I do and that He loves me. This is the same God that saved me in my mom’s womb and has given me a platform. He also gave His son for you and for me and for every single person! If He gives those things to me, do you think He would withhold something if it was good for me? No! But He also has done more in my life in the lows more than He ever did in the highs. Very few people can relate to the highs, but most everyone can relate to the lows. That is something I’m grateful to be able to share!

It’s not easy, but find the bigger picture that transcends whatever you do. It’s looking for the meaning inside of it. I’m not just trying to win games. I’m trying to impact people. Whatever it is, you can transcend the job that you’re doing if you have open eyes and open hands and you’re looking for God moments where you can encourage and love and care for people.”

In week 2 of the World’s Biggest Small Group: Identity, we’re combatting the lies we so often believe and learning to replace them with truth. Here’s a verse to think on this week as we learn:

10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

(John 10:10 New Living Translation)

Tim has been given a great platform and has used it beautifully for the Lord . God bless you Tim . Even without the platform we can be who God made us and do it to His glory in our daily interactions with people .

I read Psalm 37 this morning before checking out the video. Verses 23-24 stood out to me as relating directly to Tebow’s encouragement to live a “This Day” life.

Trish thanks for sharing these verses. 🙂 . “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. He is ever lending generously,
and his children become a blessing.” Psalm 37:23-24

TIm, I truly appreciated your perspective. I know you have taken a lot of criticism through the years and that it was often pointed at your faith. Yet, you have remained positive and upbeat. You live what you are saying, your identity comes in being a child of God. Thank you! I have found that a very difficult thing to separate from my work. This study is very helpful to realign my thinking in the right direction.

I have recently just read two of his books in two weeks when I was not super busy at work. I gained so much insight and felt the Love of God radiate through his words. What a inspiration to get up and move.

Indeed. Unfortunately, we usually do not expect athletes to be very spiritual or have anything worth saying about faith or God or the deeper things in life. However, often it is the exact opposite. We need to be open to spiritual lessons from any source.

I saw Tim at a conference a few years ago and he is the real deal. He looks lives his faith with boldness and with no shame. Way to be an example Tim!!
