Listen to Jason Gray’s Counter-Cultural Song About Wishing His Child Experiences Pain

“Sometimes good things can come from suffering.” That’s not the type of line I’ve heard in graduation songs or songs from parents to children. “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack or “Have it All” by Jason Mraz sum up the positive sentiment parents wish for their children.

But Jason Gray takes a different approach. In the first listen it almost sounds like he’s wishing disaster on his children. But he explains the lyrics more on his Instagram page. “On the surface it sounds like I’m wishing disaster upon my children, but there’s no need to wish for that. Disaster will come whether we want it to or not. Instead, it’s a prayer that when disaster comes, as it invariably will, my children will find the goodness in themselves that only disaster can reveal.”

His song reveals hope for good things in the midst of suffering rather than a frantic plea for protection from suffering. Instead of creating a lyrical fairy tale of escape for his kids, he chooses to face life as it actually is, suffering, pain, and disaster.

Amen! This is the prayer I began when mine were littles. It is a true picture of this life and learning of a full reliance on God.
