Fun Facts about Groundhogs for #GroundhogDay

There’s more to groundhogs than shadows and being literal home wreckers. For example:

1. Groundhogs are the largest member of the squirrel family and are also known as woodchucks, whistle-pigs, and land-beavers.

2. They dig intricate burrows up to 65 feet long including their own “bathroom.”

3. Woodchucks don’t chuck wood despite what Geico says –  but if they did, Cornell says a wildlife biologist has the answer. After substituting dirt for wood, he calculated that about 700lbs of wood would have to be chucked to fill their large den. (What is chucking?)

4. Land-beavers can run up to 9mph. That’s as fast a small child running toward their next snack.

5. Generally isolated animals, whistle-pigs do produce a high-pitched scream to warn the other members of their colony when danger is around.

Since groundhogs are the only animals trusted as much a local meteorologist with a masters degree, it’s good that we took time to know them better.

Enjoy your groundhog day! Enjoy your groundhog day!
