For Everyone Who Forgot About the 90’s Christian Kids Show “The Donut Man”

Can we talk about the Christian cultural phenomenon that is “The Donut Man?”

Yes, I’m throwing it way back to the 90’s. Let’s revisit the decade of silly bandz, the Rachel cut, the Motorola StarTac phone, bright neon color palettes, and a plethora of cheesy kid television programming.

When I asked my co-workers if they remembered “The Donut Man” every single one of them said “no.” What an insult to 90’s church kids everywhere.

I can’t be the only one who was evangelized to by a talking glazed donut in Sunday school? If you watched this show as a child (or an adult, I’m not judging) let me know in the comments below.

If you’ve never heard of “The Donut Man” you’re in for a real treat. A sugary donut kind of treat.

The Donut Repair Shop

The Donut Man, played by Rob Evans, aired in the 1990’s and takes place in the Donut Repair Shop. I don’t ever remember Rob actually fixing any broken donuts in his shop, but that’s ok. He was very busy teaching biblical lessons through songs and skits with the help of Duncan instead.

Duncan, if you’re wondering, is not the Duncan from the Newsboys. In fact he is a living, breathing (not actually sure about that) talking donut, who honestly looks a little bit like a bagel, but I can forgive that.

The Real Meaning Behind the Donut Man

The whole premise behind the wild and wacky Donut Man is every one one of us needs Jesus. “Life without Jesus is like a donut; there’s a hole in the middle of your heart.”

Sure. It sounds a little cheesy. But wasn’t everything in the 90’s just a little cheesy. I many not personally use a donut to describe God’s love, but it kind of works. Maybe if I was 6 I’d appreciate it more.

On Facebook, back in 2014, Rob left a heartfelt message to those who grew up on the show.

“To all the Donut Man fans who are now grown-ups: I took you seriously back then, praying that my songs would encourage your fledgling faith, knowing your mind was young, yet your heart was full and tender. Now… ‘Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the streams of life;. Tag, you’re it. Your turn to share the Gospel.”

Personally, I may poke a little fun at this show. But at the end of the day, I love the heart behind it. Let’s go share the gospel.

Now I want a donut.

I only see one comment here, so I will add to your thread. I not only remember it, I listen to it now. I am in my 30’s, and my 2 are 4 and 6…my mom got my kids hooked on the donut man so now it’s all they ask to listen to in the car.

I came across this post because I was wondering, is the donut man relevant now? And I googled it. Kind of a random thought, but…there have to be more current biblical kids shows, too…right?

My kids and I love the donut man. Since we had our surprise blessing child 7 years ago the older kids have enjoyed watching them again with their little brother as an excuse 😂. Most of our copies are VHS and then we discovered they were on YouTube and have enjoyed ones we had never seen.

I love Mr Donut Man, my son who’s 36 now listened and watched the videos as a small boy, we live in a remote community in Canada and it was the way we learned the Bible. It helped us both get the word of God into our hearts and minds. Now I’m a foster mom of a 4 yr old and he’s
Learning to love Jesus through these same videos!! May God continue to bless everyone through the videos and bless Mr. Evans and his family for doing God’s work!!❤️

I watched it with my siblings growing up in Nigeria. There were so many CDs with taped reruns! We enjoyed them all and watched them in the mid-2000s.

In 2006, Rob and family converted to the Catholic Church. He has continued to share his faith as a Catholic Christian

I loved The Donut Man as a kid. I had many on vhs(or one where someone recorded them for us), and the cassette tapes. This was a big part of my childhood.

Our children learned scripture through the songs that were sung on the Donut Man. We had videos and listened to The Donut Man in the car, via cassette tapes. We were so excited to be able to see the Donut Man Live in the late 90’s, in Fairless Hills, PA. They still remember lyrics to some of their favorite songs!

I listened to the donut man of cassette growing up in the 90’s and also throughout my teens, 20’s and now.. I listened till the cassettes didn’t work anymore and till there were no more cassette players in the car. About 10 years ago, I felt so deprived of it and managed to find the website that sold the CDs. Bought the whole set! And now I’m having trouble again because my car doesn’t have a cd player. Haha.. Spotify and you tube don’t have the full albums. Listening to the donut man albums and singing a lot to it… Read more »

Certainly a great children’s tv show that kids can still learn from today. Timeless music too!
