5 Non-Traditional Worship Songs That Get Me In My Feels

Music has a way of meeting people in the moment. Reaching us in the highest-highs and lowest-lows. The impact of music is universal and the coolest part is that it was given to us by God.

There have been so many moments in my life that words couldn’t reach me but a song could. Whether it’s the melody or the lyrics, there’s nothing like hearing the right song at the right time. And since music was given to us by God, it only makes sense for us to give it back to Him in worship.

Some moments in life I can only describe through song, and worship is the same way. There are so many things I want to express to God about my faith, but I just can’t find the words. There are so many songs I’ve sung in moments where I couldn’t find the words to say or pray. I want to share a few of my favorites that are always sure to put me all up in my feels. And while they aren’t traditional worship songs, they lead me to a posture of worship and I’m grateful for that.

1. Prodigal | Madison Ryann Ward

“Even if I run away

Even if I’ve fallen on my face

You will prepare a place for me

Waiting on my full return to Thee”

Sometimes it feels like I have failed God so many times that there’s no way He would ever want me around. But that’s not true! Even if I run away or fall, God prepares a place for me. God meets me wherever I am, and this song reminds me of that.

2. Grace Alone | Kings Kaleidoscope

“You left Your home to seek out the lost

You knew the great and terrible cost

but Jesus, Your face was set

I worked my fingers down to the bone

but nothing I did could ever atone

But Jesus, You paid my debt.”

It’s hard for me to describe how much this song means to me. The entire song is a tribute and recognition of the greatness of the Gospel. Each lyric, tracing our story from the hopelessness to the fullness found in Jesus. I turn this song on when I start to question my identity. This song reminds me that it’s by grace that I have been saved and because of that I know who I am.

3. Trust in You | Antoine Bradford

“Cause when I trust in you

I do the thing I that was made to do

To live a life that fully rests in you

and all your promises for me.”

This song immediately makes me feel joyful, like I’m on a road trip and my hand is riding the wind out the window. It’s a reminder that trusting in God is what I have been created to do. We are made to depend on something, it’s when we depend on the wrong thing is when life gets messy. But, when I trust in the One who know all, what do I have to worry about?

4. Garden | Jervis Campbell

“And how to handle Your imminence

but bow beneath the extravagance

And still You’re standing with open arms and it’s You

You never let go of me, it’s true

And the truth is what sets me free.”

When God created mankind, we lived in perfection and peace. After the whole fruit incident in Genesis 3, we lost communion with God. This song reminds me that because of Jesus, we now have communion with God. And not just communion, but because of the restoration that comes through the Gospel, we have a relationship with our Creator. Even in His greatness, God opens His arms wide to us.

5. Hope | Emily Brimlow

“So I lift my hands to the God that guides me

to the one that finds me

Even in my darkest days, He walks beside me

Singing songs of freedom, He’s singing songs of life.”

If you’re ever having a bad day, this song will put you in a whole joy-vibe. The sound of this song alone brings a sense of hopefulness and the lyrics just reinforce this. Our God not only leads us, but walks with us. In the darkest of days, God makes it possible to walk in freedom and life. This song reminds me that I was never promised a life free from suffering, but He did give me Jesus and that’s all I ever need.
